Sunken Valley, brambles Sighting D725-B |
Before any of you smart-asses out there get your panties in a bunch and email me to say that all valleys are sunken, just ease up a second and save your oxygen. I get it, okay? But you're wrong. Sunken Valley isn't merely lower than the surrounding hills, it is actually a bowl-shaped depression in the landscape. In fact, according to my Garmin GPS/altimeter that I had with me that day, the floor of the valley is even lower in elevation than the so-called "flatlands" beyond the foothills. Not only that, but there is no drainage path, yet the bowl does not fill up with water in the rainy season. This leads me to believe that the soil underneath is unusually porous. But how? Perhaps at a location nearer the ocean, where the ground is basically sandstone, it might make sense. But Sunken Valley is easily 60 miles from the nearest shoreline. I am convinced the water is being actively pulled through the soil, from there to drain away via some as-yet unidentified underground river. I am also convinced it is the dwelling place of what I call the Verdant Pseudomorphs. |
